The viaduct provides an effective if austere backcloth to the pleasantry of the village green, which still sports some of its original houses. The Hermitage is a peach of gothic thatch decorated in the centre with an ogee-arched door and two pointed windows. St Mary’s Church is a fine example of the Gothic revival - one of the earliest churches designed by George Gilbert Scott in 1841. It retains a good collection of 18th century church plate. St Thomas was the creation in the early 1930s of Edward Maufe, who went on to design Guildford Cathedral. Its brick exterior is a contrast to the reinforced concrete and plaster within. The crucifixion on the round east window is by Eric Gill. |
Floor sanding and finishing can breathe new life into battered old hardwood floors or refresh engineered wood flooring. Once you've meticulously sanded away the old finish back to the raw wood, you'll be ready to apply an oil or water based polyurethane depending on the type of finish you require. It's not a job you can rush, so some forward planning will help you to achieve the precise effect you're looking for rather than ending up panic buying a finish that fits into a particular timeframe.
Timescales for finishing with oil-based polyurethane
This can take 3-5 days, plus drying time, and depends on factors like the number of coats you need to apply, whether you intend to use a stain and the humidity present in the atmosphere. If you're leaving the floors natural, you can apply 3 coats sequentially, allowing a 24 hour drying time between coats, so long as the weather is dry. Wet weather and dark stains can add around 48 hours to the projected drying time for your floors.
Timescales for water-based polyurethanes
Water-based polys are often more popular because they dry faster. Once floor sanding is complete, you can finish your floor in just two days and then move your furniture back after forty-eight hours. Although there are other factors that can affect these timescales like square footage of flooring and humidity in the atmosphere, you'll achieve faster results with water-based products.
Curing times for your floors
You must allow at least forty-eight hours before you move your furniture back into a room, but if you can leave it for four days the finish will be significantly more long lasting and robust as it'll have had time to properly cure. Both you - and your pets - should wear socks during this time. No bare feet or shoes should come into contact with the newly finished floors. If your pet protests, then keep them in another part of the house or consider sending them to stay with friends.
Floors need to breathe while they cure completely, which can take 30 days. Keep rugs off the floor and use felt pads on the feet of your furniture. And while sanding and finishing your floors can be time-consuming, it's worth the wait to create the perfect finish.
